A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Sichuan province in southwestern China today, prompting a fresh flood alert in neighbouring Nepal and raising concerns over rising river levels in the Trishuli region.
Following the warning, authorities ordered evacuations in areas around Trishuli amid fears that water levels could rise rapidly. Nepal Police urged residents, security personnel and rescue workers to move to safer locations as the situation remained potentially dangerous.
According to Nepal Police, a water dam on the Tibet side had reportedly burst again, increasing the flow of water towards downstream areas. Authorities have intensified monitoring and urged people living near vulnerable riverbanks to remain alert and follow evacuation instructions.
Road construction work between Trishuli and Rasuwa has also been suspended as a precautionary measure. Heavy machinery and equipment have been withdrawn from the area to prevent further damage and protect workers from the rising waters.
Local residents have reported devastating losses after floodwaters surged through the Trishuli and Dhobi river areas, damaging or sweeping away homes, shops and personal belongings. Many families were forced to flee to safer locations.
Rescue and relief operations are continuing despite challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions. Authorities are maintaining close coordination to assess the situation, assist affected communities and prevent further loss of life.
