Thousands of Capital One customers have been affected by a widespread outage of the bank's mobile app and online banking services.

Users on Downdetector reported encountering a 'rate limit exceeded' error while attempting to log in, with reports rising rapidly during the afternoon.

Customers said the service either failed to load or displayed error messages when they attempted to access their accounts, with some users reporting seeing only partial account information after logging in.

As of 4:57 pm, Downdetector reported more than 2000 reports of issues in the app, with 64% of customers experiencing problems with the Capital One App, 15% with online banking, and 12% with mobile banking.

Capital One had not issued a detailed public statement explaining the outage as of Thursday evening, with website monitoring platforms suggesting the issue may be linked to account authentication systems, mobile app services or backend infrastructure.
