Abelardo de la Espriella, a US-Italian-Colombian businessman nicknamed 'The Tiger', has been named President-elect of Colombia after securing a narrow victory in the runoff election.

De la Espriella, backed by US President Donald Trump, won 49.66% of the vote, beating out leftist senator Ivan Cepeda.

The president-elect has been embroiled in several controversies, including cat killing, sexual harassment, and other allegations.

De la Espriella's remarks about tying fireworks to cats and watching them explode sparked outrage, and he was accused of animal cruelty.

He was also accused of sexual harassment in May 2026, and a court ordered him to publicly apologise to a female journalist.

De la Espriella's win marks a major shift for Colombia, as it marks a return to the right for the first time in four years.

He is set to take the oath of office on August 7, succeeding Gustavo Petro, Colombia's first and only left-wing president.

De la Espriella has made several promises, including withdrawing Colombia from international organisations, creating a security system with mega-prisons, and supporting economic laissez-faire policies.
