Ali Larijani, Iran's top security official, has been at the center of a high-stakes standoff with US President Donald Trump. Just a week after warning Trump that Iran won't stop its attacks on US bases in the Gulf until he says sorry, Israeli officials claimed Larijani had been killed. However, Larijani has since posted on X, paying tribute to Iranian navy personnel, leaving the claims unconfirmed.

Larijani, widely regarded as Iran's de facto leader, has family links to the clerical regime and has held powerful positions for decades. He has a PhD in Immanuel Kant's philosophy and has written extensively on the subject. The US had sanctioned him in January 2026 for his role in the crackdown on anti-government protesters in Iran.

Israel has also claimed to have killed Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of Iran's Basij Unit, and his deputy, Seyyed Karishi. However, the Iranian side has not confirmed these claims. The conflict has widened into a regional crisis, with Iran targeting US and Israeli bases across the Gulf.
