Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, is observed nationwide on June 19. The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free.

Federal government offices, post offices, banks, and stock markets are closed on Juneteenth. However, many private delivery services, retail stores, grocery stores, eateries, and shops remain open.

Some notable businesses that are closed include:

  • Federal government offices
  • Post offices (USPS)
  • Banks (majority, including Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, Capital One, M&T, PNC, Santander, Truist, and Wells Fargo)
  • Stock Market (NASDAQ and NYSE)

Private delivery services like FedEx and UPS have holiday delivery schedules, but their offices and pickup services are operational on Juneteenth.
