Hampton roads in North Carolina should be prepared for thunderstorms this week, with the rest of the northeastern region expected to face severe weather conditions on Monday.

The weather system moving into the region is the same one that caused severe weather across the central United States, and is expected to lose steam but still bring light showers and damaging winds.

Temperatures could soar up to the mid-90s on Monday morning, with strong sunshine and high humidity helping storms form later in the day.

A Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk has been issued for Peninsula communities and parts of western Southside, with the main dangers expected to be damaging straight-line winds, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning.

The severe weather threat will begin Monday evening and continue through the night, with the most intense storms expected to move through the region between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Residents are being urged to closely monitor weather conditions during the evening hours, with another round of rain forecast to arrive Tuesday morning.
