US President Donald Trump has announced that no tolls will be charged for passage through the Strait of Hormuz during a 60-day ceasefire with Iran, while threatening to impose a US toll if peace talks fail.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the US could impose its own toll on the passage through the Strait if the Iran talks, expected to start on Sunday in Switzerland, don't yield results in the stipulated 60 days.

The interim deal gives negotiators 60 days to reach a nuclear agreement, but that can be extended.

US forces are monitoring the situation to ensure that traffic continues to flow through the Strait, despite Iran's claim that it was closed due to a 'clear breach' of US commitments.

55 merchant ships transited the Strait on Saturday, carrying over 17 million barrels of oil.
