President Donald Trump has launched a 'war on fraud' and appointed Vice President JD Vance to lead it, sparking controversy over the White House's direct control over federal law enforcement.

During his State of the Union address, Trump declared a major crackdown on fraud across the United States, citing Minnesota as a prime example of fraud cases investigated by federal authorities.

Vice President Vance announced that the Justice Department would create a new Assistant Attorney General for national fraud enforcement with broad authority to investigate fraud nationwide.

The new division will enforce federal laws against fraud targeting government programs, businesses, nonprofits, and private citizens, and oversee multi-district and multi-agency investigations.

Critics argue that the plan is controversial because it could give the White House more direct control over investigations, breaking a long-standing practice since the Watergate scandal.

However, some supporters, like Pam Bondi, say the Justice Department is ready to prosecute fraudsters and hold bad actors accountable.
