Washington House Explosion Leaves 3 Firefighters Injured, 3 Homes Destroyed

An explosion during a house fire on Whidbey Island, Washington State, on Wednesday left three homes damaged or destroyed, and three firefighters injured.

An explosion during a house fire on Whidbey Island, Washington State, left three homes damaged or destroyed, and three firefighters injured.

The incident occurred on June 24, around 2:45pm, at Smugglers Cove Road near Lagoon Point, where a 911 call was made for a house fire.

According to reports, a blast took place shortly after the fire department personnel arrived, causing widespread damage.

Footage of the incident shows the exact moment the explosion took place, captured on a ring camera and another angle from across the street.

Emergency personnel worked at the scene, and the house was completely destroyed from an aerial view.

Two people who were also injured transported themselves to the hospital, and two fire chiefs and a firefighter were injured in the blast.

The injured firefighters are from Central Whidbey Island Fire and Rescue, and South Whidbey Fire/EMS, and are in stable condition.

A GoFundMe was started for the injured firefighters, and the department issued a statement of thanks for the overwhelming support.

The cause of the fire and explosion is being investigated by the Region 3 Arson Task Force in coordination with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE).

Local reports suggest that a cigarette is believed to have set off about 700 pounds of fireworks stored inside the house.
