A recent technical glitch at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday has raised concerns about the airport's outdated automation systems. According to an NDTV report, air traffic controllers had warned the authorities months ago about the vulnerabilities in the system. In July, the ATC Guild of India, a group representing air traffic controllers, urged the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to upgrade its automation systems, citing the need for international standards. They emphasized the importance of periodic reviews and upgrades to ensure aviation safety. The guild highlighted the advanced infrastructure used by Europe's Eurocontrol and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which utilize artificial intelligence, threat detection, and real-time data sharing. On Friday, a technical issue with the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) caused flight delays and cancellations at the Delhi airport. The AAI has since addressed the technical issue, which was detected on November 6. A review meeting was conducted by the Civil Aviation Secretary and other officials, and necessary directions were given to resolve the issue. Air traffic controllers claim that their warnings were ignored, despite the urgency of the situation. The incident has sparked concerns about the airport's preparedness and the need for immediate upgrades to ensure the safety of air travelers.
