In a bid to curb the alarming rise in traffic accidents, the Gurugram police have issued a directive making bars and restaurants liable for drunk driving. According to the new policy, establishments will be held accountable if their customers are caught driving under the influence. The move, which comes under Section 168 of the BNSS, aims to prevent reckless driving by ensuring that patrons are not allowed to leave bars and restaurants in an inebriated state. To achieve this, bars and restaurants have been instructed to deploy staff who will monitor customers and arrange for alternative transportation if they appear intoxicated. Failure to comply with the directive will result in strict action against the facility. The Gurugram Police are also cracking down on high-performance vehicles, specifically the Thar and Bullet motorcycle, which have been linked to unruly behavior. Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora pointed out that these vehicles are often used by individuals who engage in reckless driving, such as performing stunts on the road. The move comes in the wake of a significant spike in traffic accidents in Gurugram, which has seen 345 fatalities and over 580 injuries this year. The Gurugram Traffic Police have identified the riskiest roads, including NH-48, Dwarka Expressway, Sohna Road, and Golf Course Extension Road. In another initiative to make roads safer, the Gurugram Traffic Police and Google Maps have collaborated to launch a real-time traffic alert system. The system, currently operational on 129 major roads, will display warnings to drivers approaching accident-prone or hazardous zones and also display speed limits to encourage adherence to prescribed speed regulations.
