West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed support for former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly to lead the International Cricket Council (ICC). Speaking at the felicitation ceremony for World Cup winner Richa Ghosh at the Eden Gardens, Banerjee praised both Ghosh and Ganguly, hinting that Ganguly will become the ICC president in the future. Banerjee recalled her support for Ganguly after he was removed as BCCI president in 2022, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow Ganguly to contest elections for the ICC post. The West Bengal CM questioned why Amit Shah's son, Jay Shah, was retained in the BCCI while Ganguly was denied a second term. The ICC chair post has been occupied by Amit Shah's son, Jay Shah, since 2022. Ganguly and Shah worked together in the BCCI, with reports suggesting power dynamics within the board. Despite this, both Ganguly and Shah maintain a cordial public relationship. Banerjee's latest endorsement for Ganguly suggests that she believes he has a strong chance of becoming the ICC president in the future.
