The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has raised concerns over the admission process at the Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu and Kashmir. In a letter to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, VHP general secretary Bajrang Bagra claimed that out of 50 students in the first batch, only six are Hindus, while 44 are Muslims. He also alleged that the majority of the nursing college faculty are Muslims or Christians, sparking concerns over the institution's alignment with its founder's values. Bagra emphasized that the admission process should respect local and cultural sensitivities, as well as the expectations of the wider community. He urged the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board to review its policies and ensure that the institution's commitment to Hindu values is preserved. The controversy follows a protest by the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal last week, demanding that the institute be granted minority institution status to allow for reserved seats for Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir. VHP has now called for the appointment of only Hindu teachers and staff in the institution, and for public welfare projects that do not offend the sentiments of devotees and the Hindu community.
