A historic $100 million investment in Mexico's Liga de Futbol Americano (LFA) aims to transform the country's American football landscape. Led by Global Sports Capital Partners, the investment led by private equity firm Global Sports Capital Partners represents the first U.S. private equity investment in a Mexican sports league. Ryan Kalil, a former NFL centre, and ex-NBA forward Blake Griffin are part of the group of investors, which includes active NFL players Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle. They already own the Monterrey Osos franchise, which made a successful debut in the LFA, reaching the championship finals with sold-out crowds. The investment will focus on elevating the league to a professional level, providing better coaching, training, nutrition, and health and safety standards for players. Kalil believes that with these improvements, Mexican players can become NFL-calibre athletes. The firm will oversee daily operations, branding, marketing, merchandise, and TV production, with a primary goal of increasing fan awareness. MacDougall, the founder of Global Sports Capital Partners, notes that if the league can gain recognition in Mexico, it will be a success. Youth development and women's flag football will also be key areas of focus, with the LFA already having a women's flag league and Mexico's women's national flag football team being reigning World Games champions. The league, now with eight professional teams, will begin its 2026 season in the spring, with a draft scheduled for January. The investment is expected to elevate the league and provide a sustainable future for the LFA.
