India will host the Commonwealth Games for the first time since 2010, as Ahmedabad was officially named the host city for the 2030 Centenary edition. The decision was announced at the 2025 Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, with the Indian city beating Abuja, Nigeria, to the bid. The 2030 Games will mark 100 years since the inaugural event in Hamilton, Canada, and are set to feature 15 to 17 sports. Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, and Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis are confirmed disciplines, with the full program to be announced next year. The Indian city has been chosen for its 'scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance,' according to Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport. India and Ahmedabad are set to benefit significantly from the decision, with the city already hosting several major sporting events, including the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and the Asian Aquatics Championships. The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave will be one of the key venues for the 2030 Games, featuring the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, a new aquatics centre, a football stadium, and two indoor sports arenas. The complex will also include an athletes' village capable of accommodating 3,000 participants. The decision is seen as a major boost for India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics, with Ahmedabad set to stage several major events in the lead-up to the Games, including the Asian Weightlifting Championship and the Asia Para-Archery Cup. PT Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India and the IOA, said: 'We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate a 100 years of the Commonwealth Movement but also lay the foundation for the next century.'
