New Delhi: The selection of Indian boxing teams for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will now be based on trials after the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) scrapped its controversial assessment system. The new selection process will take place from May 13 to 15.

The decision comes after the Sports Authority of India (SAI) raised concerns over the lack of transparency and fairness in the assessment system, which was introduced in 2023 by former High Performance Director Bernard Dunne.

Under the new system, a five-judge scoring system will be used for all sparring bouts, and scores will be announced immediately after each bout. A total of 12 referees and judges will be engaged in the evaluation process.

The selection process will be led by women's team coach Santiago Nieva and men's coach CA Kuttappa. Campers will be given a 1% weight allowance for sparring, but finalists of the 2nd COAS Cup will not be eligible to participate in the trials.
