On Monday, Bungie announced that they will discontinue live updates for Destiny 2 with the 9 update and put the game on maintenance mode, sparking buzz about Destiny 3.

However, a sequel to Destiny is not coming as Bungie has decided to devote attention to a new game title, Marathon, instead.

Popular video game writer Paul Tassi acknowledged that the decision was 'more complicated' and noted that the developer's shift of focus on Marathon from Destiny 2 was evident in content gaps Destiny players faced over the last two years.

Tassi added that it has caused the game's user base to fall, and he is 'genuinely sad' about the decision.

The discontinuation of Destiny 2 has likely occurred due to the studio and its parent company Sony's strategic shift, with many feeling that Destiny has run its course.

Bungie has also had staffing issues with running both games after laying off around 220 employees in July 2024, and the pressures of finances have pushed the studio to prioritize one game over the other.

Concerns around whether Marathon can live up to the popularity of Destiny 2 are still uncertain, with Tassi writing that 'Bungie will not be the same after this.'
