Juan Manuel Cerundolo delivered the biggest upset of the French Open after rallying from two sets down to shock world No 1 Jannik Sinner.
The 24-year-old Argentine produced a stunning comeback victory, winning 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 to end Sinner’s 30-match winning streak and derail his bid for a maiden Roland Garros title and career Grand Slam.
Cerundolo hails from a tennis family and has deep roots in the sport. His father, Alejandro “Toto” Cerundolo, was a professional player and respected coach, while his mother, Maria Luz Rodriguez, also played tennis before later working as a sports therapist.
The Cerundolo family has produced two elite-level professionals competing at the highest stage, with Francisco, Juan Manuel’s older brother, also becoming one of the ATP Tour’s top-ranked players.
Cerundolo’s comeback instantly became one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 tennis season, and he has already had experience beating Sinner, with his brother Francisco owning two career wins over the Italian superstar.
Despite his growing tennis profile, Cerundolo has largely stayed away from public attention off the court and continues living in Buenos Aires surrounded by his close-knit, tennis-centered family.
