Katherine Legge's attempt to make motorsports history has ended in an early crash. The 45-year-old driver from England was set to become the first woman to attempt The Double, competing in the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same Memorial Day weekend.
The grueling challenge covers a combined 1,100 miles and only five drivers have attempted it, with Tony Stewart being the only one to complete all 1,100 miles in a single day.
Legge qualified for the Indy 500 and started from 26th position, but her run ended on Lap 19 after a collision with Ryan Hunter-Reay. Despite trying to avoid him, the two cars made contact, bringing out the first caution flag of the race.
Legge's Indy 500 run was over, effectively ending her historic Double attempt before it could truly begin.
