New Delhi: Double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has parted ways with his coach Jan Zelezny, a Czech javelin legend, after a year-long partnership. The decision was announced by Chopra's new management team, Vel Sports Management. Chopra, who idolized Zelezny, began working with him in late 2024 with the goal of achieving greater heights. Last year, he finally broke the 90m barrier, a milestone that sparked hopes of more impressive throws. However, the season was a mixed bag for Chopra, who finished eighth at the 2025 Tokyo World Championships and struggled with back and groin issues. Despite the setbacks, Chopra had praise for his former coach, saying that Zelezny's unique approach to technique, rhythm, and movement helped him grow as an athlete. However, Chopra has decided to take charge of his own coaching, at least for the foreseeable future, citing his newfound understanding of his body and throwing style. He plans to apply the best ideas from his previous coaches to his training. Chopra's decision comes at a crucial time, with the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games on the horizon. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) had recently stated that Zelezny was still in charge of Chopra's training, but it appears that has changed. Chopra is currently training by himself in South Africa, looking to regain his form and make a strong comeback in the upcoming competitions.
