The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi is set to be demolished to make way for a massive Sports City project, which will cater to all major sports disciplines. The new complex will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including lodging for athletes, training grounds, and entertainment venues. According to a source from the Sports Ministry, the stadium will be dismantled as part of the project, with all offices, including NADA and the Income Tax department, being relocated once the project commences. The current 100-acre site is underutilized, and the Sports City will ensure optimal use of the land. The project, which is still in its proposal stage, will require coordination between multiple ministries. The Sports Authority of India, which owns the JLN Stadium, will also be involved in the project. The Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, has recently visited the Sports City in Doha to study the model and finalize the project for India. The JLN Stadium, which was built in 1982 for the Asian Games, has undergone significant renovations, including a major refurbishment for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which cost over ₹900 crore. The stadium recently hosted the World Para-Athletics C'ship, with further modifications being made to the facility. The proposed Sports City project will be a major undertaking, with the existing infrastructure being rebuilt to create a world-class sports complex. While the project is still in its feasibility study phase, the Sports Ministry is committed to moving forward with the plan.
