Ruby Rose has unleashed a scathing attack on Sydney Sweeney following the underwhelming box office debut of Christy, a biopic inspired by the life of boxing legend Christy Martin. The film, which premiered on November 7, earned a meager $1.3 million in its opening weekend, marking one of the worst wide openings in recent history. Rose, an actress known for her role in Orange Is the New Black, took to social media platform Threads to express her disappointment and frustration. She claimed that the original script for the film was 'incredible' and 'life-changing,' and she was initially set to play the lead role of Cherry. However, she stated that Sweeney's involvement in the project ultimately led to its downfall. Rose's post also touched on Sweeney's politics, as she is a registered Republican voter in Florida. Rose criticized Sweeney's statement that the film was made for 'the people,' saying that it was a misguided attempt to connect with the LGBTQ+ community. She went on to call Sweeney a 'cretin' and accused her of ruining the film. Christy Martin, the real-life subject of the biopic, had previously expressed her admiration for Sweeney's portrayal of her life. Speaking at the Toronto Film Festival in September, Martin praised Sweeney's ability to capture her complex personality and said that she was doing an 'awesome job.' The film, directed by David Michôd, is currently ranking at the 12th position on the worst wide openings list, according to USA Today. It remains to be seen how Christy will perform in the coming weeks.
