On World Ballet Day, Bollywood actress Tara Sutaria celebrates her love for the art form that has shaped her life. For Tara, ballet was more than just mastering pirouettes – it was about understanding rhythm, control, and emotion. Tara, who started ballet training at the age of 5 under the guidance of Mrs. Tushna Dallas, a pioneer of classic ballet in India, recalls her early days of learning. She trained for 12-13 years and credits her parents for encouraging her to pursue her artistic dreams, despite the academic route. 'The discipline and poise I possess today are a direct result of my ballet training,' Tara says. She adds that her training has helped her transition smoothly into the film industry, where she can quickly pick up dance routines due to muscle memory developed through years of practice. Tara's training schedule was rigorous, with her and her sister Pia rushing from school to ballet class in South Mumbai, often changing into their ballet clothes in the car while completing homework. They also learned Jazz and Latin American forms of dance with the same school. Growing up in a Parsi household, Tara was already accustomed to Western classical music, which she listened to while rehearsing ballet routines in the car. This exposure had a lasting impact on her musical tastes. Tara is keen to dispel the misconception that ballet is only for girls. 'There is no gender attached to ballet,' she emphasizes. 'The athleticism required is more than most sports, and I hope parents and boys understand that ballet is for everyone.' Today, Tara's sister Pia runs her own ballet school, carrying forward the legacy of their teacher Mrs. Tushna Dallas. Tara is thrilled to see her sister's success and is grateful for the opportunities ballet has given her.
