Tensions in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir have escalated as security forces fired tear gas on protesters of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) following clashes. The unrest began after the local government banned the JAAC under anti-terrorism laws and a dispute over reservation in 12 legislative seats for Kashmiri refugees.

Protests have drawn hundreds to the streets, with shutdowns imposed in Bhimbar and Kotli. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions, urging an immediate de-escalation and an impartial investigation into the deaths and injuries.

Over 50 members of the British Parliament have raised concerns over the situation, writing to the UK foreign secretary to support de-escalation and the restoration of communications. They emphasized the need for peaceful dialogue and meaningful engagement to resolve any grievances.
