A shocking incident of child abuse has come to light in West Bengal's Hooghly district, near Kolkata. A four-year-old girl from the Banjara community was abducted from her grandmother's side while they were sleeping under a mosquito net near a Railway shed in Tarakeshwar. The perpetrator, who is yet to be identified, brutally assaulted the child and left her critically injured near the Tarakeshwar railway high drain. The girl's grandmother, visibly shaken, recounted the traumatic incident. 'She was sleeping with me. Someone took her away,' she said, adding that the family had been living on the streets since their homes were demolished. 'Where do we go? We don't have any homes.' The child was discovered the next afternoon, lying in a pool of blood, and was immediately taken to Tarakeshwar Gramin Hospital. She remains in a critical condition. The police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the law, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. However, the Opposition has slammed the Mamata Banerjee government for allegedly downplaying the crime. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari accused the government of attempting to cover up the incident. 'A child's life is shattered, yet the Police are shielding the State's Fake Law & Order Image, by suppressing the truth,' he posted on social media. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, and a probe has been launched to identify and arrest the perpetrator. The case highlights the need for greater vigilance and support for victims of child abuse.
