A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 12:06 pm IST on Sunday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). While the NCS reported the epicenter at 90 km, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) estimated the quake's magnitude at 6.07 on the Richter scale, suggesting it occurred at a depth of 10 km. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also reported the earthquake at 5.5 magnitude. The good news is that there have been no reports of loss of life or property damage so far. Malaysia has also assured that there is no tsunami threat following the tremors. It's worth noting that shallow earthquakes, like this one, can be particularly hazardous due to the stronger ground shaking and potential damage to structures. Located in one of the world's most seismically active belts, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are categorized as a Zone V seismic zone. This region includes parts of northeastern India, Jammu and Kashmir, and other areas prone to earthquakes.
