Trinamool Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyber heist, with fraudsters stealing ₹57 lakh from his State Bank of India (SBI) account. The funds were initially deposited during Banerjee's tenure as Asansol South MLA between 2001 and 2006. However, the account had been inactive for several years, with the MP's MLA salary being the only deposits made. According to Banerjee, the fraudsters used fake documents, including a superimposed photograph and counterfeit Aadhaar and PAN cards, to reactivate the account. They also added a phone number, gaining access to One-Time Passwords (OTPs) and transaction details. The miscreants allegedly transferred the funds to several beneficiary accounts, using the money to purchase jewelry and withdraw cash through ATMs. Banerjee expressed shock at the incident, questioning how the fraudsters were able to access his account and highlighting the vulnerability of even high-profile individuals to cybercrime. The Kolkata Police's cybercrime division has launched an investigation into the case, with officials reviewing transactions and other details to identify the perpetrators. No arrests have been reported yet, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced security measures in the banking sector and the importance of protecting sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.
