The counting of votes in the Tarn Taran Lok Sabha by-elections has taken a dramatic turn in favor of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu. With a lead of over 11,500 votes against Sukhwinder Kaur of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Sandhu's chances of winning the by-election have brightened. The results are expected to be declared by the evening, as the Election Commission of India continues to count votes. According to the latest updates from the Election Commission, Sandhu overtook Kaur in the later rounds of counting, after initially trailing behind. Mandeep Singh, an independent candidate, is currently in the third spot, while Congress's Karanbir Singh Burj is in the fourth position. The Tarn Taran by-election, which saw a voter turnout of 60.95 per cent, was necessitated due to the demise of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June. A total of 15 candidates were in the fray, with elaborate security arrangements in place at the counting centre. The by-election is being seen as a crucial test for Punjab Chief Minister and the AAP, which has won five of the six bypolls held in the state since it came to power in March 2022. The results of the by-election are eagerly awaited, as they will provide an indication of the party's strength in the state.
