In a significant development, seven opposition parties in Assam have agreed to contest the 2026 assembly polls together, aiming to oust the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power. The decision was announced by Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, who said the move is a response to the alleged harassment and injustices perpetrated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The opposition parties, which include the Congress, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI (ML), and Anchalik Gana Morcha, held a meeting to discuss their strategy ahead of the polls. While the all-party meeting was seen as a positive step, the BJP has dismissed the opposition's efforts, saying they have been unsuccessful in the past. The BJP currently holds 64 seats in the 126-member state assembly, with its allies AGP, UPPL, and BPF holding 9, 7, and 3 seats respectively. The Congress has 26 legislators, AIUDF has 15 members, and CPI(M) has one MLA. The opposition parties hope to capitalize on the anti-BJP sentiment and present a united front to the voters in the 2026 assembly polls.
