In a significant move, seven opposition parties in Assam, led by the Congress, have come together to form a joint front against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies ahead of the next year's assembly elections. The meeting, held on Wednesday, was attended by the Congress, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI, CPI(M), CPI (MLL), and Anchalik Gana Morcha. The opposition parties aim to put up a united front against the BJP's alleged harassment and injustices in the state, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi stated that the meeting marked an important step towards ridding the people of Assam from BJP's rule. However, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), another prominent opposition party, was not part of the deliberations. The opposition parties have expressed confidence in fighting the elections unitedly against the BJP and ousting it from power. Chief Minister Sarma reacted to the meeting, dismissing the opposition's attempt as a 'TV serial' that has been repeating itself for the past four and a half years. He claimed that the BJP and its allies have never resorted to such tactics and accused the opposition of betrayal. This move marks a significant attempt by the opposition parties to come together ahead of the assembly polls, following their failed attempt prior to last year's Lok Sabha polls. The outcome of this joint front remains to be seen, but it has sent a strong message to the BJP and its allies, as well as the common people of Assam.
