The Election Commission has ordered a 'Special Revision' of electoral rolls in Assam, aiming to ensure accurate and updated voter lists by February 10, 2026. The process, which will begin on November 22 and conclude on December 20, involves house-to-house verification by booth-level officers. The integrated draft electoral roll will be published on December 27, with the final roll released in February next year. The Special Revision, an upgrade from the annual special summary revision, will see booth-level officers verifying electors on pre-filled registers instead of enumeration forms. This move comes as the verification of citizenship in Assam is already underway under the supervision of the Supreme Court. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the decision, assuring the government's full cooperation in the process. The state will extend support to the Election Commission to complete the revision in a transparent and time-bound manner. The process will exclude D-Voters, a category of citizens disenfranchised due to alleged lack of proper citizenship credentials. However, any modification to their details will be done only upon receipt of an order from a competent tribunal or court. This development follows the Election Commission's order for Special Intensive Revision in several states, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal, which are scheduled to go to polls in 2026. Elections in Assam are also due next year.
