A Gauhati High Court judge has granted bail to Dr. Sangeeta Dutta, a psychiatrist accused of assaulting two minors in Guwahati, India. The court's decision came on Tuesday, with bail conditions set to ensure Dutta does not interfere with the ongoing trial. Dutta was arrested in May 2023, along with her husband, Dr. Walliul Islam, and domestic help, on allegations of physical and sexual abuse. The couple claimed the children were adopted, but an investigation was launched and charges were filed. Dutta's lawyer argued that her client had been incarcerated for an extended period and that the trial was progressing slowly, citing a significant number of witnesses yet to be examined. The court took into account Dutta's husband's earlier bail grant, also in October, and agreed that her release on bail was justified. As part of the bail conditions, Dutta must surrender her passport, Aadhaar, and PAN cards to the trial court, cooperate with the trial process, and refrain from engaging in any activities that may hinder the case's progress. Dutta's bail bond is set at ₹1,00,000, with two local sureties of the same amount. The release is subject to the trial court's satisfaction.
