The 2025 Bihar assembly elections have delivered a resounding victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Nitish Kumar's JD(U)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The five-party alliance secured 202 seats in the 243-member assembly, marking their best performance since 2010. A combination of cash transfers, welfare outreach, smart campaigning, and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's enduring popularity among marginalized castes helped the NDA overcome two decades of anti-incumbency. The BJP posted its highest vote share and second-highest seat share in the state, where it has never had a chief minister. The opposition INDIA bloc, comprising RJD, Congress, and other parties, won 35 seats, with RJD securing 25 and Congress managing only six. Key NDA leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and state ministers Prem Kumar and Maheshwar Hazari, retained their positions. Notable winners include BJP's Chhoti Kumari, who defeated Bhojpuri star-turned-politician Shatrughan Yadav in the Chapra seat, and singer Maithili Thakur, who won her maiden poll contest on the Alinagar seat. Senior BJP leader Prem Kumar continued his unbeaten streak in Gaya Town, while Tourism Minister Raju Kumar Singh retained his seat. The election saw unexpected twists, with jailed-candidate Anant Singh emerging victorious and several prominent leaders facing surprising defeats. The counting day was marked by fluctuating leads, making it a rollercoaster of surprises for voters and analysts alike. Nitish Kumar is set to be sworn in for a record 10th time and a consecutive fifth term as Chief Minister. The historic victory has cemented the NDA's position in the state, with the BJP and JD(U) poised to shape the future of Bihar politics.
