In the high-stakes Bihar assembly elections, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha is vying for his fourth consecutive term from the Lakhisarai constituency. Sinha, a BJP leader, is facing off against Congress's Amresh Kumar Anish in the closely watched contest. The results of the 2025 assembly elections are expected to be announced on November 14, with Sinha maintaining a lead of over 5,396 votes after five rounds of counting. Sinha, born on June 5, 1967, in Lakhisarai's Tilakpur, has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party since its inception and has been representing the Lakhisarai constituency in the Bihar Legislative Assembly since 2005. A seasoned politician, Sinha has held several key positions, including Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from 2020 to 2022. He resigned as Speaker after the then-ruling Mahagathbandhan moved a no-confidence motion against him. Last year, he was appointed as the deputy leader of the BJP legislative party in Bihar and subsequently became the Deputy Chief Minister under the new NDA government in 2024. Sinha's opponent, Amresh Kumar Anish, is the Congress district president in Lakhisarai and has held the post for two consecutive terms. In the 2020 assembly polls, Anish had lost the Lakhisarai seat to Sinha by a margin of around 10,000 votes. The latest battle between the two leaders gains significance as Lakhisarai is their home turf. Lakhisarai, a rural-dominated constituency, falls under the Munger Lok Sabha constituency and has a population of 5,22,233, with 72.62 per cent residing in rural areas. The constituency has a significant Scheduled Tribes (ST) population of 15.81 per cent and a Scheduled Caste (SC) population of 0.11 per cent. In the 2020 assembly elections, Sinha won the Lakhisarai seat with 74,212 votes, defeating Anish by a margin of 10,483 votes. He had also won the assembly constituency in the 2015 polls, beating JD(U)'s Ramanand Mandal by a narrow margin of 6,556 votes. In 2010, Sinha defeated his opponents and won the Lakhisarai assembly constituency with 78,457 votes, beating RJD's Fulaina Singh by a significant margin of 59,620 votes. The Bihar assembly is voting in two phases, on November 6 and 11, with the results scheduled to be announced on November 14. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is contesting on 101 seats each, while the Mahagathbandhan is contesting on 143 seats, with a significant presence of other parties in the fray.
