The Election Commission of India has begun counting votes for the 243-seat Bihar assembly elections, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking an early lead on at least 89 seats. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), led by Tejashwi Yadav, is trailing behind with leads on just 27 seats, according to the latest trends. As the counting process continues, seat-wise updates are expected throughout the day from the 46 counting centers across 38 districts. According to early trends, Tejashwi Yadav's faction is ahead on 28 seats, while Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) leads on 80 seats. In a significant development, expelled RJD leader Tej Pratap Yadav is trailing from the Mahua constituency, where Chirag Paswan's party candidate Sanjay Kumar Singh is currently leading by over 21,690 votes. Tej Pratap is contesting the seat on a ticket from his new outfit, the Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD). The Indian National Congress is also making a strong showing, with early trends indicating leads on five seats. In Chapra, RJD candidate Shatrughan Yadav, a popular Bhojpuri singer-actor, is trailing behind the BJP's Chhoti Kumari. In a surprise twist, the Aam Aadmi Party's candidate Mira Singh has taken an early lead in the Begusarai constituency. Meanwhile, Osama Shahab, the RJD nominee from Raghunathpur and son of late gangster Mohd Shahabuddin, has also taken an early lead in the Siwan region. RJD leader Vishvanath Yadav has expressed confidence in the party's performance, declaring that "Tejashwi's government is coming in Bihar." The simple majority mark in the 243-seat Bihar assembly stands at 122, which means any party or alliance needs to secure at least 122 seats to form the next government. In the days leading up to the results, most pollsters forecast a comfortable victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with projections suggesting the Mahagathbandhan would fall short of the majority mark. However, the actual results may tell a different story as the counting process continues.
