In a significant move, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has waived all charges for mandatory biometric updates (MBUs) for 'Baal' or blue Aadhaar cards issued to children aged 5 to 17 years. This decision, which took effect on October 1, 2025, will benefit around 6 crore children in India. The first and second MBUs, which typically cost ₹125 each, are now free for a year, as per an official government statement. After the year-long exemption, the fee will apply again. But what exactly is an MBU? It's the mandatory biometric update of blue Aadhaar cards, which belong to Indian children aged between 5 and 17 years. When a child enrolls for Aadhaar under the age of five, their fingerprints and iris biometrics aren't captured, as they're not developed at that age. However, when the child turns five, all biometric data, including their photo, fingerprints, and iris scans, need to be recorded. This is referred to as MBU 1. Similarly, when the child turns 15, they need to update their biometrics again, which is known as MBU 2. To make the process smoother, the government has announced that both MBUs will be free for a year, ending on October 1, 2026. After that, a fee of ₹125 will be applicable per MBU. So, what exactly gets updated during an MBU? The biometric details, including the child's photo, fingerprints, and iris scans, are taken and updated. To complete the MBU, eligible blue Aadhaar card holders can visit their nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra. They'll need to carry the following documents: - The child's Baal Aadhaar card (blue Aadhar card) - The parents' or guardians' Aadhaar card for verification - Original documentation, as needed This move is expected to simplify the biometric update process for millions of children in India, making it more accessible and hassle-free for their parents and guardians.
