India's first bullet train is on track to begin operations on the 100 km Ahmedabad-Vapi stretch by August 2027, according to Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The high-speed train will cut travel time between the two cities to just 1 hour and 58 minutes, covering a total distance of 508 km. The project, initially slated for completion by December 2023, has faced delays due to land acquisition and other challenges. However, significant progress has been made, with 329 km of viaduct and 404 km of pier work already completed. Installation of overhead electrification masts is underway, with 3,100 poles already in place. Vaishnaw said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was 'very happy' with the project's progress during a recent site visit in Surat. The bullet train's inaugural run was initially proposed on a 50 km stretch, but has been extended to 100 km due to rapid progress. The 508 km high-speed rail corridor between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is designed for trains running at 320 kmph. Construction of rolling stock depots, superstructure work at stations, and excavation of mountain tunnels are all ongoing. The full-length project is expected to begin from 2029, with the bullet train connecting Ahmedabad to Mumbai in under 2 hours.
