A major disruption in the compressed natural gas (CNG) supply in Mumbai on Monday crippled the city's transportation system, causing lengthy queues of vehicles and skyrocketing auto fares. The issue, which affected autorickshaws, cabs, and other CNG-run vehicles, was caused by a supply stoppage in the CGS Wadala pipeline network, impacting CNG stations across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. According to Mahanagar Gas (MGL), the gas supply is expected to be fully restored by November 18, noon. Currently, nearly 60% of the city's CNG pumps are operational, with the company working to rectify the issue. MGL has advised industrial and commercial consumers in affected areas to switch to alternate fuel until the restoration is complete. However, the piped natural gas supply to homes remains unaffected. The disruption has not impacted bus services in the city, with Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) confirming that operations were unaffected. BEST operates around 1,250 CNG buses in its fleet. As the city struggles to recover from the CNG supply disruption, residents can expect a gradual return to normalcy with the restoration of gas supplies expected by tomorrow, noon.
