Chief Justice of India Bhushan R Gavai emphasized the need for collaboration in achieving a gender-equal India. Delivering the Justice Sunanda Bhandare Memorial Lecture, CJI Gavai stressed that true equality demands accessible opportunities and benefits for women, not just in metropolitan cities but also in rural areas and marginalized communities. CJI Gavai highlighted that achieving gender justice requires dismantling social, cultural, and economic barriers that limit women's freedom and participation. He acknowledged the collective voice of citizens in shaping gender rights and ensuring regressive judgments are reversed. The CJI shared the vision of Justice Sunanda Bhandare, a former Delhi high court judge who championed gender justice and social equality. He emphasized that men, particularly those in positions of authority, must actively reimagine power to achieve true equality. Real progress, CJI Gavai said, will come when men recognize that sharing power is not a loss but a liberation for society. He cited the evolution of law in achieving gender justice over the past 75 years and acknowledged the importance of collaboration between men and women in rebuilding the moral and institutional architecture of equality envisioned by the Constitution. The 30th memorial lecture focused on the topic 'Justice for All: Building a Gender Equal and Inclusive India'. CJI Gavai recognized the collective efforts of citizens, courts, and institutions in shaping gender rights and promoting inclusive growth. The event was attended by several past and present judges, senior lawyers, and academicians. Justice Bhandare was a renowned judge who passed away in 1994, and the lecture series was instituted by her husband and children in her memory.
