Patna: The Congress party in Bihar is facing a daunting challenge as the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) steps up efforts to engineer a 'Congress-Mukt' legislature. With only six legislators in the 243-member House, the party is at its most vulnerable, and political observers warn that the NDA may use any means necessary to lure away its fragile MLA cadre. The NDA's history of poaching opposition members has created widespread anxiety within the Congress, particularly among its recently elected MLAs. Many of these lawmakers have little attachment to the party's ideology and are seen as vulnerable to lucrative offers. For instance, Qamrul Hoda, who won from Kishanganj, joined the Congress just last October, while Manoj Biswas, the MLA from Forbesganj, aligned with the party in early October. Senior Congress leaders have expressed concerns about the party's reliance on turncoats and the lack of commitment from some of its lawmakers. Former AICC member Kishore Kumar Jha blamed the party's defeat on deeper strategic flaws, including an overemphasis on caste politics and the marginalization of local workers. He also criticized the Mahagathbandhan's decision to announce Tejashwi Yadav as chief ministerial candidate, which he said led to the alliance's defeat. The Congress is under pressure to revamp its organizational structure and electoral tactics to reclaim its traditional vote bank. Former MLA Harkhu Jha warned that failure to do so could spell the end of its presence in Bihar politics. As the NDA seeks to strengthen its grip on the assembly, the Congress must urgently rethink its strategy to prevent further erosion of its base.
