The Election Commission of India has responded to the Congress party's allegations of discrepancies in voter data in Bihar, where the party suffered a significant defeat on Friday. In a Facebook post, the Congress pointed out that the total number of electors reported by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 6 was 7.42 crore, while the poll body later reported 7.45 crore electors in its press release after the polling. The Congress demanded an explanation for the addition of 3 lakh extra voters, but the Election Commission clarified that the increase occurred due to the inclusion of eligible citizens who applied for inclusion in the roll after the election was announced. According to the poll body, valid applications received between October 1 and 10 days before the last date of nomination were verified and added to the roll. The Election Commission stated that the revised figure of 7.45 crore was mentioned in its press release after polling, ensuring that no qualified voter was deprived of the opportunity to vote. The controversy comes after the Congress party's poor performance in the Bihar assembly election, where it won only six seats. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a decisive victory, with the Bharatiya Janata Party emerging as the single-largest party. The results marked a significant decline for the Rashtriya Janata Dal, which finished with just 25 seats.
