In a significant move, the Orissa High Court has rejected the bail plea of Mohd Abdur Rehman, a convicted al Qaeda operative. Rehman has been accused of indoctrinating young individuals and recruiting them for terror activities. He was arrested in 2015 and later convicted in 2023 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. According to the police, Rehman ran an unregistered madrasa and delivered inflammatory speeches at religious gatherings. He was also accused of traveling to Pakistan in 2015 and meeting top Lashkar-e-Taiba commanders. Despite serving a seven-year and five-month prison term, Rehman remains in custody due to a second case filed by the Odisha police under the UAPA. The Odisha CID's special task force had filed a charge sheet against Rehman in August 2023, and the trial was pending before a sessions court in Salipur, Cuttack. The court's decision to reject Rehman's bail plea is seen as a significant measure to prevent potential terror activities in the region.
