In a Supreme Court hearing, Hasin Jahan, estranged wife of Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami, argued that the ₹4 lakh monthly maintenance granted by the Calcutta High Court is insufficient. She claimed that Shami's 'ultra-luxurious lifestyle' and his estimated net worth of ₹500 crore justify a higher amount. According to Jahan, Shami's monthly expenses exceed ₹1.08 crore, and she is entitled to a fair share of his wealth. She also cited rising inflation as a reason for the increased maintenance. The couple's daughter is also entitled to ₹2.5 lakh per month, which adds up to the total ₹4 lakh interim maintenance. The SC issued a notice to Shami and posted the matter for a four-week hearing. Jahan's lawyers argued that Shami is deliberately evading his responsibility to provide equitable maintenance to his wife and daughter. Shami is also facing a trial in a criminal case filed by Jahan, alleging extreme cruelty caused by the cricketer and his family. The case dates back to 2018. The HC had granted the ₹4 lakh interim maintenance after Jahan challenged the initial order of ₹1.3 lakh per month. However, Jahan is seeking ₹10 lakh monthly maintenance, which she had initially demanded seven years ago. The SC will now deliberate on the matter, taking into account Shami's lifestyle and earning potential.
