Hasin Jahan, the estranged wife of Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking an increase in the interim maintenance of ₹4 lakh per month. The amount was granted by the Calcutta High Court in July, following a long-standing dispute over maintenance for Jahan and their minor daughter. In a recent development, the Supreme Court issued a notice to Shami on November 7, with the bench questioning the need for an increase in the maintenance amount. However, Jahan's lawyers argued that the ₹4 lakh per month is insufficient, considering Shami's "ultra-luxurious lifestyle" and his estimated net worth of ₹500 crore. According to Jahan's petition, Shami's monthly expenses are over ₹1.08 crore, and he is liable to pay ₹2.4 crore as arrears of maintenance. Jahan claims that she is unemployed and has no independent source of income to meet her daily needs and those of her child. The dispute over maintenance has been ongoing since 2018, when the trial court initially directed Shami to pay ₹1.3 lakh per month towards maintenance. The Calcutta High Court later increased the amount to ₹4 lakh per month, citing inflation and Shami's financial status. The Supreme Court has posted the matter for four weeks, and Shami's lawyers have been asked to respond to the petition. The case has raised questions about the financial responsibilities of high-income earners and the impact of inflation on maintenance amounts.
