In a recent development, the Delhi High Court has granted a three-week parole to a convict serving a life sentence in the 2009 Jigisha Ghosh murder case. The court directed the convict to remain within the National Capital Region and continue his ongoing treatment for HIV during this period. The convict, who was awarded the death penalty in 2016 and later commuted to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court, was also convicted in the 2008 murder of journalist Soumya Vishwanathan. He has been in jail for approximately 16 years. The state's counsel expressed no objection to the convict being released on parole instead of furlough, subject to certain restrictions. Advocate Anup Kumar Das, representing the convict, agreed to the grant of parole and withdrew the petition. The Delhi High Court disposed of the petition, directing the convict to surrender before the jail authorities on expiry of the parole. The convict was also required to furnish a personal bond of ₹25,000 with one surety of the like amount. Jigisha Ghosh, a 28-year-old IT executive, was kidnapped and killed on March 18, 2009, after her office cab dropped her near her home in south Delhi's Vasant Vihar. Her body was recovered on March 20, 2009, from Surajkund in Haryana. The police arrested three men in the case and led them to prosecution, recovering the weapon used in Jigisha's murder, which later led to the cracking of Soumya Vishwanathan's murder case.
