In a massive crackdown on unverified tenants, the Delhi Police has registered cases against 250 people across North Delhi, primarily for failing to complete a mandatory police verification process. The move comes in the wake of a November 10 blast near the Red Fort, which claimed 15 lives and injured several others. The blast, triggered by a suicide bomber, was linked to a white-collar terror module spanning Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.Police officials say the verification drive is necessary to ensure public safety in high-footfall areas. The process involves checking ID proofs of occupants, questioning people, and verifying tenants at over 2,500 houses.Offenders can face charges under Section 223(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, carrying a prison term of up to six months, a fine of up to ₹2,500, or both.Additionally, police have set up verification camps at all North district police stations, urging residents to cooperate and ensure their tenants undergo the mandatory verification process. Investigators from specialized units and central agencies are conducting door-to-door checks, while drones, CCTV cameras, and paramilitary units are deployed to secure the district. The verification drive is expected to continue for several days, with more cases likely if violations are found.
