Delhi's Chilling Winter Begins: Severe Air Quality and Bitter Cold

Delhi is bracing for a harsh winter as temperatures plummeted to 9.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday, 3.8 notches below normal. This marks the first time the minimum temperature has fallen below 10 degrees Celsius this winter season. The maximum temperature recorded was 26.6 degrees Celsius, 1.9 degrees Celsius below normal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a chilly weekend, with minimum temperatures ranging from 9-11 degrees Celsius and maximum temperatures between 24-26 degrees Celsius on Sunday. For the next five days, the IMD predicts temperatures will oscillate between 8-12 degrees Celsius and 23-27 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Delhi's air quality continues to deteriorate, with an AQI of 385 recorded at 8 am on Sunday. However, some areas such as Anand Vihar, Chandni Chowk, ITO, and Bawana experienced 'severe' air quality with AQIs of 412, 418, 417, and 436, respectively. The Central Pollution Control Board data shows that Delhi's air quality remained 'very poor' on Saturday as well, with an AQI of 386. According to the CPCB's air quality index, a score of 401-500 is considered 'severe', indicating hazardous conditions. Delhi recorded AQIs of 428, 418, and 404 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, respectively, making the air in the national capital hazardous. As Delhi grapples with the harsh winter and poor air quality, residents are advised to take necessary precautions and stay informed about the latest weather and air quality updates.
