National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has called for a thorough and independent investigation into the Nowgam police station blast that claimed nine lives and damaged multiple residential structures. Abdullah, a former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, criticized the initial handling of the explosive material, suggesting that those with proper expertise should have been consulted before attempting to deal with it. In a statement to ANI, Abdullah acknowledged that the incident was a result of 'our mistake' and that those who understand the explosive better should have been consulted first. He also linked the fallout of the Nowgam explosion to the atmosphere of suspicion faced by Kashmiri residents across the country following the recent blast in Delhi. Abdullah urged authorities to establish responsibility and prevent similar incidents, calling for a deeper probe into the circumstances leading to the blast, including the alleged involvement of individuals with medical backgrounds. The Jammu and Kashmir Police are investigating the incident, which occurred during the handling of an explosive device inside the police station premises. Preliminary findings suggest that the blast was an inadvertent one during a mandated forensic procedure. The Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat has assured that any speculation about the incident is unnecessary. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has attributed the cause of the incident to the highly unstable nature of the explosive material recovered during an ongoing terror module probe linked to the Delhi Red Fort blast that occurred on November 10, which killed 12 people.
