A massive technical glitch at Cloudflare, a web infrastructure firm used by hundreds of thousands of companies worldwide, has caused a global outage affecting several major websites and applications. Thousands of users globally, including those in India, were unable to access popular platforms like X, OpenAI's ChatGPT, Canva, Uber, and multiplayer games. According to outage tracking website Downdetector, over 10,000 complaints were logged for several websites and applications. Even Downdetector itself struggled to load, becoming a victim of the outage. The affected websites include Canva, OpenAI, Spotify, X, Grindr, Uber, and Dayforce. This is the second major internet disruption this year, weeks after Amazon's cloud services unit AWS malfunctioned in October. Cloudflare acknowledged the issue, stating that it was investigating a 'spike in unusual traffic' that caused errors in its network. The company's spokesperson said they were working to resolve the issue and ensure all traffic is served without errors. Cloudflare's software acts as a buffer between websites and end-users, protecting sites from attacks that might overload them with traffic. As of 5:20 pm, over 5,600 reports of issues with X were recorded on Downdetector, with over 1,300 users in India also reporting outages on the microblogging site. Users took to social media to report the widespread disruption, highlighting the impact of the outage on daily life and business operations. Cloudflare's technical glitch has left many wondering what caused the spike in unusual traffic and how to prevent such disruptions in the future.
