In a bid to curb drunk driving, the Gurugram police have issued a directive making bars and restaurants liable for their customers' actions. The directive, invoking Section 168 of the BNSS, instructs establishments to monitor customers and arrange for safe transportation if they appear intoxicated. Failure to comply will result in strict action. Police Commissioner Vikas Kumar Arora emphasized the importance of responsible drinking and driving, stating that establishments must display clear warnings about the dangers and consequences of drunk driving. The move comes in the wake of a surge in traffic accidents in the city, resulting in 345 fatalities and over 580 injuries this year. The Gurugram Traffic Police have identified high-risk roads, including NH-48, Dwarka Expressway, Sohna Road, and Golf Course Extension Road. To improve road safety, the traffic police have collaborated with Google Maps to launch a real-time traffic alert system. This system will warn drivers of accident-prone areas and display speed limits to encourage adherence to traffic rules. Notably, the police have also targeted high-performance vehicles, specifically mentioning the Thar and Bullet motorcycle, which are often linked to unruly behavior. Commissioner Arora stated that these vehicles are often driven by individuals who engage in reckless behavior, such as performing stunts on the road. The initiative aims to reduce road accidents and promote responsible driving practices.
